Crush injuries and crush medicine conjure images of earthquakes, collapsed highways, and rubble piles. Knowing what to do in the critical first 24 hours is vital for saving the lives (and kidneys) of these patients. But even without a major disaster, we still care for these patients on a regular basis.

Every stroke patient who lays on the floor for 24 hours, every intoxicated patient who passes out and lays still overnight, they all are at risk for the "smiling death". However, through simple, low tech, and timely EMS care, we can dramatically reduce the burden of these injuries.
